FAQ About Modular Homes
prefabricated custom modular homes vermont new england floor plans nantucket massachusetts connecticut new hampshire maine

Starting in the early 1700's, Yankee craftsmen pre-built house frames in their own yards and transported them to the house sites around town. This method of construction took advantage of; familiar building conditions, access to tools, decreased travel time for the craftsmen, and consequently, increased efficiency and quality of home building. Huntington Homes, Inc. continues the tradition and ingenuity of these original craftsmen.

What is a modular home?

A modular home is an off-site traditionally framed (or stick built) home built in a controlled environment and then transported to your site for final assembly. Each home is built to the local building codes for where the house is being delivered. We use the same materials and construction techniques that any quality on-site builder would use. However we install them with more accuracy. Rather then cut rafters with a speed square and skilsaw, we use jigs and a $10,000 radial arm saw. Rather then cut wall studs to length, we buy them pre-cut. Rather then squaring roofs 2 stories up in the cold rain and snow, we square rafters at ground level with jigs.

Are Modular Homes and Mobile Homes the same?

No. Mobile homes (or manufactured homes) are built on metal chassis to their own minimum Federal Building Code. Modular homes are stick built homes, built offsite. We are subject to the same building codes that any site builder is subject to. Once onsite, modular homes are installed on foundations and become permanent structures. What is the built quality of a Modular Home?

Our consistent relationships with our suppliers allows us to offer quality building materials at a competitive price. At Huntington Homes, we are proud of the materials and techniques used in each home we build. As a testament, customers we built for 20 years ago are still recommending us to family and friends. Please view our specifications.

How long does it take to build with Huntington Homes, Inc.?

Our building schedule is determined by how many people are in the queue before you. However, once your plans hit our shop floor, the modular component of your home is built in about two weeks. It is then delivered to your site where it could take 3 weeks to 3 months for your local builder/dealer or contractor to place the finishing touches, depending on your level of detail.

Will banks finance a modular home?

Yes. Most banks, appraisers, and insurance companies treat modular homes the same way they do site-built homes. Most often, customers build using construction loans, however each of our builder / dealers structures his or her relationships differently, so check with them first.

Can I build from my own plans?

Absolutely. However, you need to be mindful of the system in which we build. We need to be able to break down your house into pieces that can travel down the road.
