At Huntington Homes we recognize first and foremost that we are a building company. For us, energy efficiency is a component of good home building, not the single nail in which to hang your hat. We believe that at the end of the day, your builder should have the experience and workmanship to deliver a well built home, not simply a well insulated wall.
Every day we see new marketing campaigns turning a variety of companies and products "green" seemingly overnight. At Huntington Homes we have a time tested approach to efficiency founded on experience. We constantly examine new energy efficiency products and construction techniques and use our experience to differentiate the latest fads from the newest breakthroughs. In 1978 our standard construction was 6" wall insulation, 12" attic insulation, air sealing at drywall penetrations, and Marvin triple glazed windows. This was a rare construction technique at the time and unheard of in the modular business. In 1984 we were using cellulose insulation, and vapor barriers. In 1988 we tested the first generation of spray in place foams. Not all of these products are still in use, but the experiences taught us valuable lessons. Most importantly, they taught us how insulation, moisture management, and air quality work in the real world with real occupants.
Today, more then ever, energy efficiency is a critical component to a well-built home. We continue to foam seal all penetrations through the drywall, install Panasonic ventilation and controls, and to use only ENERGY STAR rated windows and doors. We have received the latest training on basic building science, insulation, and moisture management and have self imposed the thermal performance guidelines of the ENERGY STAR for Homes program. This combination of experience and science is how we are able to continually improve the quality, comfortable homes that our reputation is founded on. Beyond the energy efficiency of the homes we build, our method of construction has great environmental efficiencies. We recycle all our drywall scraps, cardboard, and paper. Most materials are delivered in bulk directly from the manufacturer. We internally recycle and re-use most framing and plywood cutoffs. And our workman travel daily to a centralized location rather then to scattered jobsites. Our final product is delivered to the jobsite with significantly less embodied energy then an onsite stick built home. So great are the environmental efficiencies, that the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) organization awards 4 points to a project simply because it's built modular. This is one of the largest point awards of the entire LEED program.
